Tokyo International Singers is an
independent chorus. Founded in 1980 by Carol Melby
and Marcel L’Esperance, it has as its purpose the
performance of great choral works during the year
and lighter music for summer concerts.
Foreign and Japanese members have the opportunity
to meet, share interests and form friendships
through their love of music. For Japanese members,
the chorus provides the opportunity to perform
music not often done by Japanese choirs and to
receive training under a foreign conductor.
Members come from countries such as Australia,
Austria, Belgium, Canada, Democratic Republic of
Congo, Denmark, England, Finland, France, Germany,
Hong Kong, Hungary, Indonesia, Italy, Ireland,
Jamaica, Malaysia, Mexico, the Netherlands, New
Zealand, the Philippines, Russia, Scotland, Singapore,
Slovenia, South Korea, Sweden, Switzerland, the
USA, Wales, Zimbabwe, and Japan.

ペランスによって創始された。代表的な合唱曲を演
奏し、夏のコンサートは小品やオペラ曲を抜粋して
演奏するなど、この３０年間幅広い演奏活動をして
いる。
外国人と日本人の、音楽を通じた交流の場でもあ
り、日本人のメンバーにとっては、外国人の指揮者
のもとで訓練を受ける良い機会でもある。

Marcel L'Esperance, conductor, was born in Massachusetts of
French Canadian parents and he grew up in a bilingual environment.
He studied at Boston College, Boston University, Claremont Graduate
School and the University of Illinois. He studied under several
internationally recognised master conductors, such as Robert Shaw
of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Chorale; Dr. Charles Hirt of
the University of Southern California; and Helmut Rilling of Stuttgart,
Germany. His major voice teacher was the renowned American bass,
William Warfield, who made his reputation as Porgy in Gershwin's
opera Porgy and Bess and was in the movie of the musical Showboat.
He also conducts the Chiba International Singers, the International
Women's Chorus and the L'Esperance Singers.

アメリカ合衆国マサチュ－セッツ州に生まれる。両親はフラ
ンス系カナダ人。ボストンカレッジ、ボストン大学、クレア
モントスク－ル、イリノイ大学で学ぶ。指揮法を、アトラン
タ交響楽団・合唱団のロバート・ショー氏、南カリフォルニ
ア大学のチャールズ・ハート氏、ドイツ・シュトゥットガル
トのヘルムット・リリング氏等、国際的に有名な指揮者に師
事。声楽をガ－シュインのオペラ『ポ－ギ－とベス』のポ－
